One of the first tracks written for Duma, the opener Old Continent I was a conscious effort to combine the synths from the original Blade Runner soundtrack, percussion from Ulver's Assassination of Julius Caesar and the psychedelic guitar from Porcupine Tree's Voyage 34. Although I can still see and recognize these influences, I think the final result ended up much more unique. Thematically, Old Continent I provides a glimpse into the rest of Europe's perspective in World War 2 and beyond. The samples used were 1940s and 1950s documentary footage as well as the same LSD experiments sampled by Porcupine Tree's Voyage 34 to provide some much needed texture, as heard in the acoustic-led sections of the track. Overall, I think the track is one of the strongest on the record.
