about

старый континент два

The final track on the album, Old Continent II originally began as an ambient coda for the end of Old Continent I before it developed into something much more epic, leading to the idea of bookending the album with both parts to create a greater sense of cohesion. My favourite parts of the track are the reprises of elements from Old Continent I as well as the drum-led ending. The heavy riffing was a very deliberate effort by Sid and I to create a section akin to Karnivool or Tool but with a more psychedelic sound.

Conceptually, the track follows Europe (and the rest of the world)'s rebirth after the brutal second world war, as signified by the two major samples in the piece: American president Lyndon Johnson's Great Society speech and British prime minister Harold Macmillan's Winds of Change speech. Although not directly related to the Russian theme central to the rest of Duma, Old Continent essentially acts as a (very lengthy) prologue and epilogue to the album.
