about

ледоруб

Another one of the earliest tracks written, Picahielo, Spanish for "ice pick", documents the murder of Leon Trotsky in Coyoacán, Mexico in 1940. Leon Trotsky was banished by Josef Stalin from Russia in 1928 as a potential threat and sought refuge in Mexico. The sample at the end is from a speech given by Trotsky in the late 1930s discussing his thoughts on the Moscow Trials and gives thanks to President Cardenas and the people of Mexico for their protection. In Mexico, Trotsky continued to oppose Stalin's bureaucracy until he was silenced by the Spanish-born NKVD agent Ramón Mercader with an ice pick to the head.

I'm very proud of this song, and I think all of the contributions really elevated the ending - the addition of bongos by Dylan's bongos and additional shakers during Sid's solo gave a great bouncy feel and the addition of saxophone gave a Pink Floyd vibe that makes the song for me. Although written by myself and Wojciech, many of his parts were redone by Sid to achieve a more consistent and better sound. In the end I think it was worth it, the acoustic and indie rock-ish electric guitar gives a nice summery vibe that I enjoy a lot. A lot of time was spent getting the right keyboard sounds, and I'm pretty pleased with what Greg and I managed to achieve sonically. A video (for this and Magnetic Mountain) should be on the way if all goes according to plan!
