The Popu A thoroughly inventive and creative album. Solemn to powerful, with great features. Favorite track: Soundtrack.

iAmTheEpicOne Multiple listens of God Himself is quite rewarding; there are many nuances that add much to the expansive soundscape and the sampling is all done with taste. The company of guest contributions is worth a listen alone, but the real gem is the cohesive production. The endless inspirations and genres in this work are thought out and performed marvelously. Favorite track: Catabasis.
Whiprust
Whiprust thumbnail
Whiprust While it mainly explores sounds already toyed with on Duma and Arbat, God Himself uses those sounds in a much different way. This album places much more focus on the atmospherics than those previous releases, with songs often playing with tension (teasing a release and not offering it for another minute or so), abruptly mellowing out completely to allow for introspective space, or slowly creeping out into GY!BE style Crescendos. These elements lend the album a much more matured sound compared to its predecessors.

Unfortunately however, as a sacrifice for those amazing atmospherics, God Himself often puts the tightly woven, hook laden melodies of Duma to the side. This sacrifice does somewhat feel like a downgrade, given that’s the core quality that made Duma so excellent, yet this album’s differences allow it to experiment into a more mature sound and make it a wholly unique experience from Duma.

All in all though, Quinn Downton has created an album that marks a bold step forward for the project’s sound and avoided creating a Duma 2, and he’s better off for it. Here’s just to hoping that next time around we get the best of both worlds.

Best Tracks: On Steps, Catabasis, Nights Calm, Castilleja Favorite track: On Steps.
Quintessence
Quintessence thumbnail
Quintessence An album that throws its weight in a number of directions, seamlessly flowing from post-rock to progressive metal, from ambience to noise. Backed up by a myriad of talented guest musicians, this sophomore effort demonstrates heightened versatility and maturity in the songwriting department. All in all, Buy Atumatu. Favorite track: Catabasis.
Dan Curhan
Dan Curhan thumbnail
Dan Curhan A post-rock inspired, drummer-led journey through groove and riff and build. There's a massive amount of nuance to this solo-project's soundscapes, and they're engaging and varied throughout. Great atmospheres, great dynamics, and well worth your time.
